The organisation that I run is responsible for assisting business development throughout New Zealand. Obviously statistics are extremely important, that we can measure and understand our marketplace and SME business throughout New Zealand.

How I use statistics and how I suppose I have a relationship with Statistics New Zealand is in the work that we do when we are looking at the macro environment and so its looking at the number of firms within New Zealand, the number of firms that are micro in size, or medium, where they are, what industries they are in, and all sorts of other ways of looking at that large and really important sector.

Stats New Zealand uses a very wide variety of statistics that come out and not only in terms of publication, but also customised data.

Most business plans would require some sort of research or view of statistics in the field they are operating in. So research and stats are always a very critical part of understanding whether a business owner has got a good grasp of their situation or not.

Most of the time I take them straight to the Stats NZ website which I find is a very useful website, very easy to find the information that they require. So that gives them quite a strong tool which they can use time and time again to find other information down the track.

Understanding how to access statistics, also understanding how to utilise them effectively in a business operation can only add value to a business's opportunities

As a university person I am using statistics all the time. I didn't fully understand what I could get until I went through a workshop with Stats New Zealand.
